Who Actually Wants Silver Cranks?

This isn't only aesthetics. Four groups keep asking for it.

Titanium frame owners. Raw or brushed titanium reads as warm grey. Black cranks fight it; silver sits with it. This is the single largest group asking for silver components.

Modular System: The SPIRIT ecosystem separates crank arms, axle, spider, and chainrings. Switching lengths only requires swapping arms, not replacing the entire crankset.

Choosing Your Length: 140 to 160mm

145mm: Riders ~155–162cm, or those experiencing hip crowding at top dead center on 150mm setups.

Compatibility: Check These Three Things First

This is where most wrong orders happen. Read this section before you check out.

1. The axle is 24mm — and it is not interchangeable. SPIRIT G2 crank arms use a 24mm SCM440 steel axle. The SPIRIT Carbon Crank uses a 29mm (DUB) or 30mm axle. These are not compatible in either direction. If you're switching from Carbon arms to G2 silver arms, you need the G2 axle too.

2. Use the SCM440 steel axle only: The legacy 24mm aluminum axle is strictly for G1 products. G2 owners require the corrosion-resistant SCM440 steel axle.

 

Installation Notes

The crank bolt takes an 8mm hex at 50–55Nm — the spec is laser-marked on the arm itself, so you don't need to hunt for the manual mid-build.

Two things worth getting right:

  • Use a torque wrench. 50–55Nm is high enough that guessing by feel goes wrong in both directions. Under-torqued arms creak and eventually damage the interface; over-torqued arms are their own problem.
  • Re-check after the first ride. Standard practice on any new crank installation, and it takes thirty seconds.

Silver vs Black: Does the Finish Change Anything Functionally?

No. The finish is cosmetic — same AL7075-T6 alloy, same CNC process, same weight, same Q-factor, same chainring compatibility.

The one practical difference is that silver hides scuffs differently than black. Anodised black shows shoe rub as pale scratches; silver arms show wear far less visibly. On a crank arm — which takes heel contact and shoe rub throughout its life — this is a small but real advantage for anyone who keeps components for years.

Silver is available in 140, 145, 150, 155 and 160mm, the short-crank range. The black G2 arms cover a wider span including140, 145, 150, 155, 160, 165, 167.5, 170 and 172.5mm.

Are silver crank arms heavier than black?
No. Finish does not meaningfully affect weight. SPIRIT G2 arms weigh 371g per pair at 155mm in either finish. If you need lighter, the carbon SPIRIT arms are 268g per pair, but they start at 145mm and cost considerably more.

Can I get 140mm crank arms in carbon?
No. The SPIRIT Carbon Crank Arm range starts at 145mm. 140mm is only available in the G2 aluminium arms — which is also the only way to get 140mm in silver.

Will silver G2 arms work with my existing SPIRIT crankset?
If you run SPIRIT G2, yes — the arms swap directly and your axle, spider and chainring carry over. If you run the SPIRIT Carbon Crank, no: the axle diameter and spider interface both differ.

What torque do SPIRIT G2 crank bolts need?
8mm hex, 50–55Nm. The specification is marked on the crank arm.

What's the Q-factor of the SPIRIT G2?
150mm. If that's too narrow for your hips, pedal extenders will widen your stance without changing the crankset.

Do short cranks reduce power?
Research on crank lengths from 145mm to 175mm has found statistically equivalent peak power output. Shorter cranks change cadence and hip angle, not your ceiling.
